11 Nov Facebook Clarifies Details of Revenge Porn Pilot Program
Facebook Global Head of Safety Antigone Davis recently clarified several details surrounding the company’s anti-revenge porn pilot which is currently being tested in Australia. A step in the program which requires the user to upload nude pictures was met with concern and ridicule due to potential privacy issues it may cause.
Davis said that uploading the nude photo or video is a proactive measure that the user can take so that Facebook can tag it as non-consensual explicit media. However, he also mentioned that a “specially trained” representative from Facebook’s Community Operations Team would have to review the image before it gets hashed.
Some critics responded that it would be better to hash the image locally so that only the hash gets uploaded, but Facebook Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos replied that human review is needed to prevent adversarial reporting.
