01 Nov Experts Say Social Media Info Regularly Used Without User Consent
Research by experts at the University of Edinburgh revealed that information from social media is regularly used in research projects, but without consent from the user.
The researchers said that with the development of tools that can draw patterns from large datasets, studies, such as those that can look into social media updates to predict potential mental health problems, can now be conducted. However, they added that the current ethics framework on consent, privacy, and ownership is considerably lagging behind technological advancements.
Dr Claudia Pagliari of the University of Edinburgh’s Usher Institute said that it is essential to treat personal information with confidentiality and respect, even if it has been willingly shared in the public domain.
