EU e-Privacy Law to Penalize Sites that Bypass Ad-blockers

EU e-Privacy Law to Penalize Sites that Bypass Ad-blockers

It was reported that the European Parliament is backing an amendment to the forthcoming e-Privacy regulation which will prevent websites from barring services to users that use ad-blockers.

The proposal will require such websites that use targeted advertising to find other “fair and reasonable” ways to offer their services to users.

Observers noted that this could lead to a number of other problems, one being that sites could be forced to show twice the number of non-targeted ads which may cause a much worse user experience, thus affecting the site’s revenue. It was pointed out that this may lessen the number of digital startups in Europe, and less investment in the improvement of online services in existing ones.
