09 Jul Earny App Saves Users Money in Return for Email Access
A retail app called Earny helps users save money on online purchases, but sends out emails on their behalf.
In a story from CNBC, one of their employees discovered that the money-saving app sent emails to retailers using his account to request for price protection on an item she purchase online a few days ago, which price has since dropped. The email sent by Earny posing as the employee was able to get her a $10 credit at the expense of her privacy.
Upon sign up, the app requests for permissions, including the ability to send emails on your behalf. While the authorisations are transparent, many users do not pay close attention to what those permissions entail as with the case of this report.
