28 Nov Duke University: Photon-based Quantum Computing Key to Unbreakable Encryption
Researchers from Duke University, Ohio State University, and Ridge National University were reported to have increased the transmission speed of quantum key distribution (QKD) by 5 to 10 times.
The study, published in the latest issue of Science Advances, suggests that QKD, which uses photons to encode data in quantum bits, may soon become a practical cybersecurity protocol. The researchers said that aside from the single-photon detector, they were able to develop the system using commercially available telecommunications hardware. They were also able to fit the entire transmitter in a box as big as a regular computer CPU, further highlighting the possibilities of it being used a practical piece of security hardware in the next few years.
