Detroit Medical Center Data Breach Affects Over 1,000 Patients

An estimated 1,529 patients were informed by Detroit Medical Center (DMC) of a data breach that involved their private health information.

In a statement made by DMC last Thursday, the breach was caused by an employee of a staffing agency that was contracted by the hospital. Reports say the employee shared the data to unauthorized individuals that were not associated with DMC.

The staffing agency notified DMC, who in turn informed authorities about the data theft. The employee was dismissed by the staffing agency, and can no longer access DMC computer systems and facilities.

The DMC refused to divulge any further details regarding the task assigned to the contracted workers. To date, affected patients were those visiting DMC between March 2015 to May 2016.
