13 Apr Congress Questions Zuckerberg Over “Shadow Profiles”
Last Wednesday at the hearing before the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Rep. Ben Lujan asked Mark Zuckerberg about “shadow profiles” which, according to privacy advocates, is information collected by Facebook on non-users.
While Zuckerberg demurred and said that he did not know what a shadow profile was, the Facebook CEO did confirm that they conduct various forms of data collection from non-users who do not voluntarily provide their data to the social network.
Nate Cardozo, senior staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation further explained that this data comes from various sources, including brokers who sell customer information a user has provided to other businesses, as well as web browsing data sent to Facebook via social buttons.
