Chinese Police Now Using Face Scanning Glasses

It has been reported that Chinese police are now using smart eye wear equipped with facial recognition to identify possible fugitives traveling via trains.

Chinese authorities say that the glasses eliminate the process of having to ask passengers for their identification. However, concerns have been raised that the government might use the technology to target political opponents and minorities. China has already been criticized for using the facial recognition to herd Muslim Uighur minorities in Xinjiang.

Counter-surveillance expert Adam Harvey remarked that wearables can significantly augment a police officer’s processing power, but this rapid upscale in police identification, surveillance, and processing may bring in new concerns.
