China Plans Iris Scans for All Citizens

It was reported last Saturday that a number of Chinese lawmakers are pushing a proposal that would link eye recognition technology to the country’s national ID system.

At the 13th National People’s Congress (NPC) in Beijing, Zhao Qisan and 28 deputies from Central China’s Henan Province made the suggestion in a motion which said that iris recognition should have pilot trials in provincial regions and sectors such as public security, finance, social insurance, education and poverty relief.

However, UK charity Oxfam said that some people have raised concerns about the privacy risks that accompany the collection and storage of this kind of personal information. Zhao likewise said that legislation is required to ensure the security of private information of citizens, including iris information.
