BLU Settles with FTC for Sharing Data with Chinese Partner

Phonemaker BLU settled with the US Federal Trade Commission this week and agreed to implement a “comprehensive data-security program” where it will be subjected to third-party assessments of its security program every two years for 20 years.

BLU had been found to be sharing sensitive customer data which includes full text messages, real-time locations, telephone numbers, contacts, and installed apps with Shanghai-based AdUps Technologies which collected the data from affected devices as frequently as every 24 hours.

The issue was brought to light in 2016, after which BLU notified its customers that AdUps had stopped its data collection activities. However, it was found that AdUps still collected the data from older BLU devices without adequate oversight.
