20 Mar Authorities Ask Google to Provide Data on All Mobile Devices in the Vicinity of a Crime
Google had reportedly aided the local law enforcement of Raleigh, NC, in an investigation involving the pursuit of two gunmen by providing them with data from all the mobile devices within a 17 acre range of the crime scene.
A Raleigh police spokesperson said that they requested data from all devices running location-enabled Google apps, a tactic previously used in a similar search warrant in Orange County, CA.
A Wake County district attorney also said that data investigators sought from Google only comprised of anonymized account numbers without content. However, the media noted that Google may have been complicit in supplying further information when it was pressured by the authorities.
