Australian Privacy Chief to Retire Next Month Without Immediate Successor

It was announced earlier this week that Australian Information Commissioner and Privacy Commissioner Timothy Pilgrim will be retiring at the end of March. However, Australian Attorney-General Christian Porter also revealed that they are still looking for a replacement, which may mean that the leadership of the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) may possibly be left in limbo.

It was noted that the privacy of Australians had been eroded during Pilgrim’s tenure, largely due to former Attorney-General George Brandis who instituted mandatory data retention and exercised increase hold over Australian telcos.

However,  Brandis’ replacement praised Pilgrim for effectively governing the OAIC and enhancing the office’s relevance in a continually evolving policy environment.
