07 Aug Arrested Indian Tech Demonstrates Easy Method of Stealing Aadhaar Data
India — Last Sunday, Ola technologies founder Abhinav Srivastava conducted a demo on how easy it is to steal Aadhaar information from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) database. Srivastava was jailed last week for stealing the said information.
In the demo, he revealed that data protection like Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) was not coded into the government’s online security system. Through shortcuts, he gained entry to agency sites using the Aadhaar data.
The absence of HTTPS enabled Srivastava to attack an e-hospital run by the National Informatics Centre, which had a customer database agency linked to UIDAI. Moreover, he designed an app that led users to the server. The said app has now been removed from the Google store.
Srivastava claims he only enabled entry to the server and did not steal any information. He is charged for violating and leaking Aadhaar database information violating several Indian laws.
