16 Jan Apple Mistakenly Sends China Data Migration Notification to Several iCloud Users
Earlier this week, several users reported receiving an email from Apple notifying them that their data will be moved to servers in China, which raised some confusion and privacy concerns.
Apple quickly owned up to the mistake and clarified that only the data of users living in China, or those who set their country as China on their device will be moved to the new servers in Guizhou.
Apple had already informed Chinese Apple ID holders last Wednesday that a company called Guizhou-Cloud Big Data (GCBD) will be handling the data stored in said servers. However, Apple maintained that GCBD is committed to providing their customers strong data privacy and security protection, and that no backdoor will be made for governments or other entities.
