Amazon To Stop Selling Blu Smartphones Due To Privacy Issues

Last Tuesday, Amazon pronounced it will stop selling Blu smartphones on its site, following privacy concerns revealed by KryptoWire researchers at the recent Black Hat convention in Las Vegas.

Blu provides units from Shanghai Adups Technology which was reported in November 2016 to have compromised its firmware, particularly low-end devices being distributed in the US such as Blu R1 HD. The vulnerability was exploited to gather data from users.

Though Adups claimed to resolve the product’s defect, KryptoWire researchers showed that the phone is still sending unsolicited personal data to the company’s server in China.

These issues led Amazon to suspend Blu from selling their devices on the site, stating that the privacy and security of their customers is paramount. Until the issue is resolved, Blu units will not be available until further notice.

To date, Blu has released a statement denying allegations that spyware was pre-installed in their smartphones.
