Amazon, British Police Partnership Raise Privacy Concerns

A partnership between UK police and Amazon which provides public service notifications to Echo smart speaker users have alarmed privacy advocates who fear that the role of Alexa is intruding into the privacy and security of the public.

It is said that the next iteration of the program will allow users to directly report crimes using the smart speakers. Consumer rights expert with the Electronic Privacy Information Center or EPIC Sam Lester says that since authorities have long sought data from the devices and accounts of users, there needs to be strict regulations put in place. Lester said aside from adding encryption, limits should be set on data retention, and unnecessary voice recordings should be permanently deleted.
