Amazon Asks Indian Customers to Provide Aadhaar Numbers

It has been reported that Amazon customer care agents had been asking customers in India to provide their Aadhaar number if they wish to track lost packages.

A number of experts have criticized the move, saying that it is not one of the five instances where the number is supposed to be used, and pointed out that it could have profound consequence in terms of the customer’s privacy.

Amazon responded by clarifying that it preferred to use the Aadhaar number as proof of identity for lost packages or missing delivery since it is the most widely held identification and can help in case an investigation is needed. However, it vowed to carry out possible investigations, albeit in a limited capacity if the Aadhaar is not provided.
