Aadhaar Critics Report Harassment, Surveillance

Researchers and journalists who have questioned India’s national ID system reported that they had been harassed or received criminal cases from government agencies.

According to eight researchers, activists, and journalists interviewed by Reuters, said that the government had become extremely sensitive of criticisms against the Aadhaar. In one instance, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) even filed a forgery, impersonation, and unauthorized computer access complaint against a newspaper and a reporter who wrote about the Aadhaar data leak.

The Editors Guild of India condemned the UIDAI’s move, calling it an unfair, unjustified direct attack on the freedom of the press.
