500,000 American Voter Records Compromised in Most Recent Leak

According to the Kromtech Security Research Center, around half a million US voter data has recently been exposed due to a misconfigured CouchDB database. This is the second such incident this year.

The database which had 593,328 sets of records that contained sensitive information such as names, addresses, dates of birth, ethnicity, as well as voting preferences, were left completely open and viewable by the public. The database was also reported to have contained the data of every voter in Alaska.

TargetSmart, the data firm which compiled the information, said that the exposure was the fault of a third-party company called Equals3. However, TargetSmart’s chief executive Tom Bonier said that nobody else was able to access the data except for the team that discovered the leak.
