20 Oct 114 Voluntary Breach Notifications Submitted to OAIC in 2016-17
Sydney, Australia – In its annual report, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) revealed that it has received 114 voluntary data breach notifications and 35 mandatory digital health data breach notifications from 2016 to 2017, which is a 29% increase from last year.
The OAIC said that this could have been brought about by its efforts in increasing awareness on data breach notification laws, and the increasing trust of Australians in the Commission.
The OAIC also revealed that has investigated all cases brought to them involving the misuse of personal data.
Information and Privacy Commissioner Timothy Pilgrim added that the most common issues they encounter relate to the security, access and disclosure of one’s personal information, as well as collection and quality of information held by the industry.
